Conversation with my Husband

"Honey, what are those shiny splatters on the cubboards above the microwave and stove?

Gee, probably splatters from when you cooked supper last night, what did you do about them when you found them?  Did you clean it up?

Well I told you, I didn't clean them up because I wasn't sure what they were!

Like they could be anything I would permantly want to keep on my cubboard!  Sheessshhhh.  Gotta love them, it's illegal to kill them!

Back to work

Back to work tonight.  It should be interesting as we only have 2 scheduled tonight due to one nurse taking a day shift and one being on vacation.  That leaves me being charge and our new nurse.  He is doing pretty good.  The resource team hopefully well send some nurses who are used to working on my floor.

They are doing lay-offs this week.  This will cause a lot of stress and worry.  As many as 50 people. Happy Nurses week to us.  Most of the time this will be management and not nurses but there are rumors of downsizing our entire hospital.  People just can't afford to go to the hospital and free standing surgery centers are taking alot of business plus the doctors offices are doing alot of their own procedures right on site.  What would happen if my hospital where to close.  We are the trauma hospital and the best heart hospital around.  It would be a huge loss to this town.  I keep hearing how the economy is doing so good.  Not in this town.  There are lay-offs all the time.  First Gateway left and they closed the stockyards, now MCI.  The only new businesses are fast food places or strip malls.  Not many where you can make a living.  I hope I make it to retirement before we have to re-locate.

Well fishing yesterday was just awful.  I had 3 bites and it turned out to be a turtle.  It was windy but very pretty at the lake.  We never went to my patients pond because we weren't 100% we were at the right place and since we would have had to walk across a corn field I didn't want to be at the wrong place and have some farmer chasing me in his tractor, LOL.

Well, I have to get to the bank and then find a card for my MIL.  Take care everyone.

The Fat Man finishes his Walk

I have been following Steve Vaught's walk across America for the last 6 months or so and am happy he finished.  It has been a long soul searching walk for him and he shed 100 pounds along the way plus hopefully gained the insite he desired.  His was an inspiring story as he had the same struggles and doubts with his weight loss, but as he walked  he worked past them and finished.  His journal changed alot over the months as more and more sponsers joined in, but the story remained unchanged.  Way to Go Steve.  I am proud of you.   http://www.thefatmanwalking.com/

Today is weigh in day.  I am only down officially 1 1/2 pounds so that 1/2 pound from early came back.  That is the trouble with digital scales.  Even doing my rather obcessive stripped down to nothing with an empty bladder weigh in, I was still only down 1 1/2 so I will call that official.  I will have to do my weekly summery of my Nutritional data to see where to make changes.  I didn't get in as much exercise as I like and I really miss water aerobics.

I checked into the cost of the Advair inhaler the doctor put me on and have decided I can't afford the monthly expense of it. $200.00.  That is just unbelievable.  To tell the truth I haven't noticed much difference.  Anyway no magic pill to help me breath good enough to take my water class.

Breakfast this morning is going to be a Strawberry Banana Smoothie.  I got the recipe from Light and Tasty, which is one of the best magazine I get with low fat low calorie recipes.  I usually have most of the ingredients, or can get them, which isn't true in some recipes.  They are so fancy and expensive to make that only the rich who live in a large city could afford them.   Light and Tasty though is more down to earth and most of the recipes are submitted.

                         Strawberry Banana Smoothies

3/4 c fat free milk

3/4 c ice cubes crushed

1/2 c reduced fat strawberry yogurt

1/2 c frozen unsweetened strawberries

1 small firm banana, chopped and frozen,

sugar substitute = to 1/2 c.  (I use the whey low because I don't like the after flavor in alot of sugar sub but use what you like.)

In a blender, combine all the ingredients; cover and process for 30 to 45 sec. or until smooth.  Stir is necessary.  Pour into chilled glasses.

Someone askedme if I meditate.  Yes, usually twice a day.  I worked oncology for many years and they had a class to teach us meditating as a stress reduction.  I hadn't used it for years but started again when I began my weight loss journey.

Meditating has helped me through many things in my life.  It calms me and helps me stay focused.  I meditate before any surgery or painful procedure and use my breathing techiques to stay relaxed.  I use it for pain control, it helps me relax sore muscles.  I use it for positive imagery to help picture how I will be at goal.  For me it is an important part of my life.  I think it helped me get off my blood pressure medication, along with the weight loss.

Well as usual I rambled on and on again.  You will find I am gabby in my journal, but not much of a talker in person.  I am a good listener.  I am going to have my breakfast and pack things up.  I am going fishing.  It is suppose to be cool, in the 60's and slightly breezy.  To windy and the fishing is bad so I hope it isn't very windy.  I am going to the gravel pit my patient gave me permission to fish in.  Since it is around 40 miles away we will be gone most of the day.  I am packing a slim fast for lunch as I hate to touch food after I have been fishing so this way I can just drink out of a can.  Talk to you all later.

My Photo Entry

Pam from Times of My Life One Nurses Story talked about this in her journal and I thought it would be fun.  Here is my entry. You have to enter what you think is a cool picture.  The bush was in my mother in laws back yard and was crawling with snakes mating.  Made for a good picture. If you want to play along leave a link to your journal at John Scalzi's site By The Way...

Anticipation worse then reality

Meditation is running into reality. It does not insulate you from the pain of life. It allows you to delve so deeply into life and all its aspects that you pierce the pain barrier and go beyond suffering.

-Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, "Mindfulness in Plain English"

That wasn't that bad!  I put it off and put it off and it wasn't that bad.

Almost didn't happen though.  I get to the doc's and they tell me after I am in the room that she is just going to look at the toe today, not take the nail out!  What!

I can hardly afford to go once much less twice for the same thing.  They wanted to make sure it wasn't infected.  I told the nurse very nicely that I had been very clear on the phone that it wasn't infected and I wanted it removed, not just looked at.  I was pretty ticked about the whole thing.  Fortunately my Doc checked the toe and said she would do it today.  The bad thing is we had to wait awhile and it is late enough no fishing.  Hopefully tomorrow.

The toe is nice and numb now and hopefully won't hurt much when that wears off.  I hope she fixed it so it won't ever come back.  She put some acid on it again that is suppose to prevent it from returning but I have had it done 3 times now and it keeps coming back.  Took 2 years this time though so that is alittle better.

I got this email in the mail today.  I always am looking for ways to improve my exercises and thought this article was good.  Discovery Health :: The Three Exercises You Must Do for a Tighter You

Every once in awhile I need to wear my blue jeans with the zipper.  I put them on yesterday and they sure felt looser.  I have to remind myself that even when I am not loser I am losing inches from the exercise.  Putting the pants on made me realize my waist was much smaller and the seat of the pants are downright baggy.  It wasn't that long ago I could wear these or zip them up.  Now they are almost getting too big.  Nice feeling.

I have to go through my closet.  I have so many clothes I can't wear anymore and since I am never going to be that size again I might as well get rid of them.

Ran across this great recipe again while I was looking for meal idea.  I got this recipe from this site. http://www.gourmania.com/index.htm  They have some wonderful lean recipes but some great ones for diabetics, you name it.  It is for people who are crazy about food, Gee sounds like your's truly.

Split Pea and Barley Soup
Source: Healthy Helpings/MealLeaniYumm!

For a delicious smoky flavor, add the cut-up carcass of a smoked turkey along with the barley!

2 cups green split peas, rinsed and drained
3 carrots, chopped
3 or 4 stalks celery, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
12 cups water, chicken or vegetable broth
1/2 cup pearl barley, rinsed and drained
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 cloves crushed garlic, if desired
2 tsp. canola oil
2 medium onions, chopped
1/4 cup chopped fresh dill

1. In a large soup pot, combine split peas, carrots, celery and 1 onion with water. Bring to a boil. Stir in barley, bay leaf and garlic, if using. Reduce heat and simmer partly covered for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Add salt and pepper to taste.

2. In a nonstick skillet, heat oil. Saute the remaining 2 onions on medium heat until well-browned, about 6 to 8 minutes. Add onions to soup along with dill. Simmer soup 5 to 10 minutes longer. Discard bay leaf (and turkey carcass, if using).

Yield: 12 servings. Reheats and/or freezes well. If soup gets thick, add a little water or broth.

Today is the Day

Since chocolate comes from cocoa beans, is it OK to consider it a vegetable?(Sadly, the answer to that is "no.")

Well, I am dressed and ready to go to the doc's.  Let the torture begin!  I think the worse part will be the needle in the toe to numb it.  I sure will be glad when it is done.  I am hoping to go fishing afterward.

I was moaning and growning about how slow my weight loss was these days to my husband in spite of all our changes in how we eat.  He told me something that really made me think.

Maybe your losing so slowly because your at the weight you are mean't to be! He said.

I had to stop and examine what he said.  I have always been heavy.  After menopause and quitting smoking though I really packed it on.  Fast.  Now that I have lost I think a total of 56 pounds,  I am back to what I normally used to weigh for most of my adult life.

He said the reason I originally wanted to lose weight was to get healthier and I am now.  I exercise regularly,  ride my bike, hike....My blood pressure is good, low even, and  I feel like I have peeled 15 years off of my life.

I thought about what he said but I am not going to stop.  I can't believe I am mean't to be this heavy so I am going to continue on.  I just have to be content with the slowness that is my plan.  Someone mentioned it should help the skin shrink along with the weight loss and they are right.  Losing slow and exercising I have little problem with it.  Not that I would turn down I free tummy tuck, LOL.

Well, I am off.  Thanks for everyone's well wishes.

My Ingrown Toenail

Ok, I know this really strays from weight loss, but I am going to tell this anyway.  My journal, my story.

A long long time ago..... maybe 5 years ago........ I had a really,  really bad ingrown toenail.  It hurt so bad I was taking my shoes off at work and wearing shoe covers.  I was afraid to have it taken care of.  Since I was the house supervisor back then, doing my rounds on every floor was extremely painful.  I let it go long enough the ingrown toenail started pushing out of the skin at the top of my toe and it got very infected.  Gross I know, but I have a good pain tolerance and a healthy horror of going to see the doc.

Now at this time my oldest son also had a very badly infected ingrown toenail.  Hating to see him suffer, I convinced him to see his doctor and I went along. That way I could see how they took care of it.  They used this very tiny little fine needle and injected his toe.  First they had put a rubber band around it so the medicine would stay just in the toe.  About 15 minutes later the doc came to see if the toe was completely numb and painlessly removed my son's ingrown toenail.  He said it didn't hurt at all and  the relief was tremedous.  Feeling very foolish for putting it off so long I also made an appointment with my doctor.

Now my doctor had been my doctor for many, many, many, many, years.   Everyone was shocked he was still practicing.  I refused to change doctors just because he was old and I never had anything really seriously wrong with me anyway.

So anyway the day of my appointment comes and I have Rick come with for courage.  I wasn't to concerned though after seeing my son have his done. However,  I should have been afraid~~ ~ ~ ~ very Afraid!

My doctor came toward my toe with shaky old man's hand and with a needle that was at least a 20, maybe an 18.  The lower the number in needles the bigger the needles.  He was shaking so much it took two passes to hit my toe.  With watery eyes he injected my most infected area of my toe.  I can't even begin to describe how badly that hurt.

Unfortunately that wasn't the worst for me.  Immediately after he injected my toe he grabbed scissors and jammed it under my toenail and cut it in half.  Then he got some hemostats and grabbing hold of the troublesome nail he ripped it out.  My screams echoed in the hallway.  Children in other rooms begin to cry.  Even his nurse turned pale and grabbed the counter top to keep from dropping to her knees in shock.

Rick just stood there pale and extremely grateful he never had trouble with his nails.

After wrapping me up in an entire roll of gauze, the kindly old doctor bid me a fond farewell.  In shock I, THANKED HIM, and staggered out.  In the car Rick asked me if that was as awful as it looked and I burst into tears and started to shake.

Why do I bring this up?  My nail is again ingrown and causing me pain.  I have another appointment to get it taken care of in the morning with my new doctor.  My other doctor finally retired.  I spent 25 minutes quizzing her on how she prepared a toe before removing a hangnail. Since she already thinks I am weird, she cautiously answered all my questions.

I am asking for everyone's prayers tonight.  Surely it could not happen that way twice.  I must have been being punished for something terrible I did like eating a candy bar or something.

I wonder if I will sleep tonight.  Maybe I will stay up all night writing stupid stuff in my journal to keep my mind off of tomorrow.   If I survive I have decided to go fishing tomorrow.  I will need the balance.  I am going to meditate tonight and tomorrow and practice my breathing.  I can do this, I will live through this................I hope!

I heard today that rickets is coming back and they are linking it to children being completely covered in sun screen which is blocking the Vit D they need plus they don't play outside like we used to as a child.  I have children in my neighborhood,  I just don't hear them much.  They are too busy playing video games and watching TV.
